Developing the next generation of artists – meet Jonah

For as long as I have been part of the musical theatre world, The Regals Musical Society have continuously proven themselves as a premiere community theatre group that exhibits a genuine interest in fostering and encouraging performative talent.

My first voluntary involvement in a musical was when I was 17 – The Lion King Jr with The Regals in 2019. As a performer with no theatre experience, I felt welcomed in an environment that encouraged risks and freedom of expression. I made connections and bonds from this production that I have to this day, which upon reflection and observations within the Sydney community theatre scene, Regals foster authentic experiences like no other.

In 2021, Regals asked me to music direct their junior show – once again, having no previous experience. The team and committee around me provided the best safety net I could possibly ask for, encouraging me to make risks, try different methods and allow music to be engaging and accessible whilst achieving a quality sound for the community to enjoy.

Years have passed. I write this having now music directed The Regals’ last 4 of their last 5 shows (by the end of 2024). They have continuously fostered my growth as a creative, being a gentle guide all while allowing me to flourish and find my unique craft in music direction.

Having just concluded a four year degree at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, I’ve gained a unique skill set and flair with The Regals that an institution cannot teach. In striving for excellence, I have had dozens of opportunities in working with incredibly talented creatives, both cast and crew, who all say the same thing – The Regals put the community in community theatre. They have fuelled my drive for a professional career in music in their continuous strive to provide the very best.

As only a kid new to theatre only a few short years ago, to now being sought after by other societies to music direct – I am indebted to The Regals for their continuous support, professionalism and high-end performance standards that continue to push me, and I will always be grateful to have grown up in their environment.

Critically Acclaimed

We pride ourselves on creating “professional level quality for community theatre prices”, and without losing the sense of community, and freedom to grow and learn. Below are reviews from a few of our recent productions:

“Kiss Me, Kate” was a joyous celebration of theatre – witty, energetic and fun. The enthusiasm and dedication of the entire cast and crew was evident. ~Kiss Me, Kate, 2024

Credit must also go to the vocalists – soloists and ensemble – who demonstrated remarkable vocal dexterity and range. There were so many “wow” moments that I lost count.
~Hunchback of Notre Dame, 2023

“This Regals ‘Priscilla’ is full of heart and the audience last night loved every second of it. You could feel the energy coming off the stage, the standing ovations were well deserved and the audience hanging around for hours after the curtain is a testament to all involved.”
~Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, 2022
